On the 15th May 2009, John Daniel Hurley of Cork, Ireland, was cruely taken away from his family and friends. Danny, as he was known, was a mainstay of the St Mary's AFC midfield since its very first season in 2005. Players Player of the Year in that innaugral season, he won the award again in the summer of 2009. He played over 100 games for the club, scoring 16 goals.
A fantastically gifted football player, its of the field where he missed more. He is missed as a son, he is missed as a big brother, he is missed as a young brother, he is missed as a soul mate and lover and he is missed as a friend.
That is why, on the 9th and 10th of July, some of his friends are attempting to salute the memory of this man, with a 4 team football tournament.
St Mary's will host Kerrydale Celtic, Blochairn Star and Windlaw at Toryglen football centre, in a knockout tournament, with the semi finals taking place on Friday the 9th of July. The first semi final kicking off at 6.30pm at the indoor pitch and the second, following straight after.
On the Saturday, the 10th, the third/fourth play off match will kick off at 12pm. There shall be an 'old crocks' match straight after, for some of Dannys friends and family who arent as nimble of foot, as the four entrant teams.
After the crocs match, the 2 winners shall play out the final for the innaugral Danny Hurley memorial trophy.
Its with that, that St Mary's, Dannys family and friends would like to invite YOU to come along and support the event. Entry to the Saturday games will be £2 for all the games.
After the games, you are also invited to the Vogue Bar in Rutherglen, where the drink will flow, there will be a Karaoke and a few raffles. An ultimately any funds raised on the day (or donations) will goto Scottish Children charity ABERLOUR.
Can we say thank you, to John and all at the Huddleboard for a kind donations to the running.
Thank you to Gordon Kelso and Duncan Yull, who both have kindly waived their referee's fees for the event.
Thank you to Roberta at the Vogue, who will host the events after the match itself.
